Residential propane FAQ
-
Propane is a clean, versatile and safe gas produced from natural gas processing or crude oil refining.
It is commonly used as a supplemental heating source, and powers stoves, refrigerators and residential water heaters. It is valued for its efficiency, reliability and cost-effectiveness.
-
Harnois Énergies offers several tank sizes designed for residential use:
- 200 lbs
- 420 lbs
- 500 USG
- 1,000 USG
The right tank size depends on your consumption and the appliances you use (for example, a generator). Harnois Énergies helps you choose the tank that best meets your needs.
-
For residential tanks (heating, stove use), propane refill prices are charged per litre and vary based on market conditions.
Contact our team to get a quote today.

The location and installation of a residential propane tank are regulated by the Régie du bâtiment du Québec (RBQ) to ensure the safety of users and workers.
Only qualified professionals holding a certification issued by the Ministère du Travail, de l’Emploi et de la Solidarité sociale are authorized to fill propane tanks, regardless of capacity.
For more details, please consult the Canadian Standards Association regulations.
-
To ensure compliance, Harnois Énergies recommends contacting your general contractor: they can confirm that the work meets current standards and that the propane service connection can be carried out safely.
-
An appliance’s consumption depends on its BTU rating. As a guideline, you can refer to the consumption chart below to estimate usage. However, it is recommended to consult the manufacturer’s manual for precise data.

There are two simple ways to check your propane level:
1. Manual gauge: lift the red cover on the tank to view the indicator dial.
2. Telemetry: this system allows you to monitor your propane level in real time on your mobile phone, through your Harnois Customer Portal, for a small annual fee.
If you do not have telemetry and would like to add this service, please contact our customer service team.

Yes, it is completely normal for a propane tank not to be filled to 100% during a refill. According to CSA Group standards, propane tanks must not be filled beyond 80% of their capacity. This safety margin allows the gas to expand safely
-
Before starting any landscaping work, it is very important that you contact Harnois Énergies to confirm whether any underground lines connect your propane tank to your building. This verification helps prevent damage and avoids any disruption to your service.

Propane is naturally colourless and odourless. To make leaks easier to detect, an additive called methyl mercaptan is added, giving it a distinct smell similar to rotten eggs.
This smell may indicate:- a propane gas leak
- a nearly empty tank (this can also produce a faint odour without a leak)
In all cases, check the tank level and close the valve as a safety precaution.
-
If you smell propane at home, follow these steps to stay safe:
- Close the valve on the tank or appliance by turning it clockwise to shut off the propane supply.
- 2. Check the propane level in the tank, if it can be done safely.
- If the tank is empty, the smell is normal and there is no leak. Contact Harnois Énergies to schedule a delivery.
- If the tank still contains gas, do not use the appliance until it has been inspected by a technician.
- Open windows to ventilate the area and allow the gas to disperse.
- Avoid any ignition sources, including open flames, smoking materials and electrical devices/batteries.
- Leave the building calmly and make sure everyone evacuates.
- Contact Harnois Énergies so a technician can assess the situation, make the necessary repairs and safely restore service.
-
Before and during flooding
- Secure your propane tank to a fixed object. Even when full, a propane tank can float or become displaced.
- Shut off the propane supply at the tank and to all gas- or electrically powered appliances.
- Avoid all ignition sources: do not smoke, use open flames or operate electrical devices.
- Evacuate the area as soon as possible. In case of flooding or fire, contact emergency services (911). Firefighters are responsible for securing the electrical supply.
- Contact Harnois Énergies as soon as water reaches six inches to report the situation and assess whether the tank can be temporarily removed.
After flooding
- Do not restore propane or electrical service until all water has been fully removed and the installations have been inspected.
- Have the tank inspected by Harnois Énergies before restarting service.
- Contact the manufacturer of your appliances (fireplace, water heater, etc.) for a full inspection before using them again.
- Ensure proper ventilation of the area to eliminate any remaining gas odour.
-
Yes. In an emergency, it is strongly recommended to immediately close the propane tank valve and turn off any appliances using propane, even before emergency services arrive.
Never attempt to disconnect, repair or seal any equipment yourself. Only a certified professional should carry out any intervention safely. In the event of a leak or equipment failure, contact Harnois by phone as soon as possible.
-
To ensure the safety and proper operation of your propane system:
- Clear a path at least one metre wide to the tank to allow easy access for the delivery hose or technicians.
- Clear the area around the tank to facilitate access.
- Remove ice and snow from the enclosure around the tank so it can open easily.
- Remove snow regularly, as it can affect equipment performance and accelerate wear. (Contrary to popular belief, snow does not act as insulation.)
-
Yes. To ensure safe access to your home propane tank and allow safe servicing by delivery personnel and technicians, it is recommended to keep the area around the tank clear. This includes trimming or removing any trees or shrubs that could obstruct access.
